Have you ever heard others say something to the affect of, “I’m blessed with a nice big house” or “I’ve been blessed with good fortune” as you tilt your head back looking at every inch of their enormous house. Maybe you sit back and wonder, what have they done in order to get blessed like this? What am I doing wrong?
A person asked me about this. He had issues with people that were saying they were blessed by their good fortune. Not that he had issues with rich people or felt any ill to them, it was more like how are they blessed where he had to be much more careful and wise with his money. Why were these people so blessed and not him? Unfortunately, all I could do was shake my head and shrug.
As I was reading the Bible the other day and in a note on the side the publishers were talking about blessings. They stated that blessing to humans always looked like money, things, etc but God thinks of it differently — in fact, Paul looked at it differently. He was trying to tell us that just by having the saving grace of Jesus Christ and His payment for our sins is blessing enough. What’s a bigger blessing than that? If it wasn’t for Christ we would be still bound in sin. With His death and resurrection, it is so easy for us to come to the Father. Dealing with present life and eternal life, I’d say eternal life is more important than anything else or any other blessings.
The best blessing is being adopted into God’s family. Sure, we might want things, but do we really need those things?
After reading the passage and the side note, I was listening to a song called “10,000 Reasons” sung by Matt Redman. This reminded me of what I just read and opened my eyes to something else. We have so many reasons to be thankful, with our salvation being priority one, but it got me thinking we have over 10,000 reasons to be thankful! It may not be wealth, fancy cars, or a big house, but maybe you have family, friends, or a caring spouse. Maybe you don’t have that, but you God’s beauty all around you: sunrises, sunsets, flowers, and air rushing into your lungs every time you breath. Some days or weeks your thankfulness may be very minimal, but that’s okay! It isn’t how small or large the item or idea of your thankfulness but the main thing is you’re thankful.
I’ve heard it takes three weeks to create a habit. Whether this is true or not, let’s do this — each evening think of at least one thing you were thankful for from that day. Try to think of something different for each day. If you are thankful for the same thing two different days, one of those days add another thankful item. I’ll do this throughout the next three weeks and I’ll comment on my thankfulness and add it to the comments below. I would be thrilled to see yours also!
Keeping the perspective,
Lauren
