What brings pleasure into your life? What brings a smile to your face and warmth to your heart?
I was reminded the other day of one of these simple pleasures. I have three dogs and yes, I have a zoo. No admission fee but good luck trying to keep your sanity around here.
The youngest dog who is nine years old (63 in human years) never acts her age. If you met her you would guess she would be in her terrible twos. She runs everywhere. You sit on the floor and she takes off tearing around the house to find a toy so you can play with her. There is no middle speed. It’s 0 or 524 mph and no in between. As much as she can cause headaches, you know she loves you. She sits up in your lap always ready to be loved. She’ll snuggle right into you as you lay on the couch. When I’ve cried she’s always there to lap up my tears as they fall onto my face. Now you have a little clue of how this 16-pound bundle of wavy black, tan, and white fur acts. It’s never a dull moment.
Snow came pouring out of the heavens getting at least four inches of snow in about a day and a half. One dog shivered so badly when he came in, one dog didn’t want to go out because it was cold on her paws, the fur blob on the other hand absolutely loved it!
She bounded like a gazelle through the African grasslands except she doesn’t have the legs of a gazelle, try more like a porcupine, and it was snow instead. Her ears flapped like a bird trying to take off as a rooster tail of snow flew behind her.
And that gave me one of the biggest smiles of all times just to see her joy as she enjoys what she loves. It wasn’t a new car, it wasn’t fancy jewelry, it was simple joy.
My question is this, what if we experienced that happiness with the simple pleasures? What if we looked around this world and saw the small things that could give us joy? A simple face splitting smile? It wouldn’t diminish the hardships, but look at the joy we could experience as we go through life. Think about it.
